Here are some photos of Ex-battery hens, courtesy of the British Hen Welfare Trust, These hens have just been rescued and are on their way to a new 'Free Range' retirement.

The hen on the left below is in a very poor state, yet the hens that have the least amount of feathers seem to be the best layers. Not all hens are like this and the feathers soon re-grow. The hen on the right is more typical with a few patches of feathers missing.

Below are some rehomed ex-battery hens and some that have made a full recovery, (living with a Lavender Pekin Bantam).

Not all ex-battery hens are brown in colour! In Canada and the U.S, consumers prefer a white egg so commercial strains of the White Leghorn are used. Here are some photos of these hens, courtesy of Jerry White.
