Notes on the Categories of Medication in the UK

Medicines for animals are in the following categories in the UK.


POM-V Prescription Only Medicine - Vet.

A medicine, to be supplied by a  vets prescription. It must be prescribed (orally or in writing) by a vet to animals under his care following a clinical assessment, and which may be supplied by a veterinarian or pharmacist in accordance with the prescription.


POM-VPS Prescription Only Medicine - Vet, Pharmacist or Suitably Qualified Person.


A medicine for food-producing animals (and horses), supplied only on a vets prescription, which must be prescribed by a vet, pharmacist or SQP (either orally or in writing) and which must be supplied by one of those groups of people in accordance with the prescription.


NFA -VPS Non Food Animal Medicine - Vet, Pharmacist or Suitably Qualified Person.


A medicine for pets that has to be supplied by a vet, pharmacist or Suitably Qualified Person.
