This has been reproduced with kind permission of Fancy Fowl Magazine.
Fancy Fowl visited the homes of 3 Orpington breeders: David Pownall, Rob Boyd, and Graham Hodge.
David is very well known in the fancy and is becoming ‘the name to beat' with his beloved Orps. He keeps the Large in Black, Blue and Buff, and he has the Blacks in Bantam. Rob only keeps Bantams at present due to time constraints and limited resources, but has bred some very good Blacks, Blues, and Chocolates this year. Graham is fairly new to the breed but is progressing well with his Blacks, Blues, and Whites. One of his aims over the last year has been to improve the Whites, which he has done with some conviction, and I believe he will continue to do so.
David, Rob, and I paid Graham a visit along with Steve Dace recently where he showed us his latest additions in the form of housing and stock since his feature in Fancy Fowl earlier in the year. We had a very enjoyable day and Graham's wife put a lovely spread on - this for me, is what the hobby is all about. All 3 breeders are respected in the fancy and do a lot for the Orpington breed. It was good to see such thriving stock along with some very good breed examples.
We hope you enjoy this pictorial feature, spread over 6 pages of one of the country's most popular breeds. If you have an interest in Orpingtons, you can contact the Secretary of the Club, Andrew Richardson on Tel: 01995 601772 or Philip Smedley for the Buff Orpington Club, Tel: 01904 468387.
