Japanese Bantam Photos

The Japanese Bantam is called the Chabo in some parts of the world. Originating in Japan where they can still be found today. They are a docile bantam breed that are characterised by their very long upright tail. Their wings point downwards and they have very short legs. All Japanese bantams are heterozygous. The short legs are caused by a single lethal gene. During breeding, 50% of the embryos receive a mutant allele and a wild type allele and get short legs, 25% of embryos get 2 mutant alleles and die before they hatch and the remaining 25% get 2 wild type alleles that gives them longer legs which is undesirable to most breeders and are of no use for future breeding to get short legged bantams.

They are available in a number of colour varieties including Buff, White, Black, Blue, Black-Tailed-Buff, Black-Tailed-White, Black Breasted Red, Grey, and Barred.
