If one of your birds is limping, check the underside of its foot for Bumblefoot. This is normally a swollen lump that is full of puss, sometimes there is a black patch or spot on the underside of the foot.

When Waterfowl are lame or limping, or go off their feet, they usually have worms and you should read Worming Ducks.

Causes.

Bumblefoot is caused by bacteria (Staphylococcus aureas) infecting a cut or injury.

Treatment.

The puss needs to be removed - this can usually be done by squeezing the lump. In some cases, the lump will require piercing to get the puss out. Once drained, an antiseptic cream should be applied and a covering should be applied to prevent infection getting in. Antibiotics can sometimes help.
